Our staff approach the teaching of reading, initially through the understanding of phonics, and as such, have adopted the DfE’s Letters and Sounds scheme along with the use of jolly phonics. Both schemes make full use of a multi-sensory approach.
Phonic sessions are taught daily to EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 children.
Once individual letter sounds and names are known to a child, they can begin to blend and segment CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. Progress beyond this (CVCCs etc) is assessed regularly along with the understanding and use of basic sight vocabulary.
We primarily use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme which is supplemented by New Way, Jelly and Bean, Bangers and Mash and Cambridge schemes. We use these for individual home and school reading and for guided reading groups.
We also monitor reading through the Accelerated Reader program.
